Tibet Golden Route Tour - 6 Days

Tibet Golden Route Tour

For centuries Western travelers were interested with exploring the forbidden land, sometimes enduring months or even years of hardship, only to fail in their mission to reach Lhasa. Their accounts of what they saw and heard along the way have only added to the charm of this magical land. Traveling to Tibet is no longer burdened with danger and hardship as in years gone by. Unlike those early adventures, we can take you to Tibet in comfort and safety. However, the relatively easy access to the country does by no way diminish the excitement of making it to "The Roof of the World" and the wonders that you will experience. Potala Palace is a place where you can appreciate the Tibetan culture, religion and art of architecture as well.

Jokhang Temple is the spiritual center of Tibet. Every day, pilgrims from every corner of Tibet trek a long distance to the temple to pray for their now and future. The temple is the product of Han, Tibetan and Nepalese architectural techniques. Around the temple is the Barkhor Street, the oldest street in a very traditional city in Tibet. We can have a visit after the Jokhang visit.

Today’s highlights are Drepung monastery and Sera monastery. About 8km west of central Lhasa is the Drepung monastery, once world's largest monastery with about 10,000 monks. These white monastic buildings piled up on the hillside. Walking up to the hill is a pleasant thing, an easy break from the solemn ambiance inside the halls and chapels. Drepung is one of Lhasa's two great Gelugpa monasteries, the other is Sera. Around 5 km north of central Lhasa, Sera may not be as grandiose as Drepung, but is more serene surrounded by many small temples. The 'Buddhism Scriptures Debating' in Sera is very famous.

Day 4: Lhasa – Shigatse:
Today we will drive to Shigatse. Make a tour to Yamdroktso Lake on the way. Yamdroktso Lake is a coiling, many-armed body of water shaped like a scorpion. It doubles back on itself on the western side, effectively creating a large island within its reaches. For Tibetans, it is one of the three holy lakes in Tibet. Also, we will go for the tour of Palkhor monastery, built in the 15th century, is situated in the west of Gyantse Town with mountains enclosing form three sides of the east, west and north. Its uniqueness is that its three sects of Buddism-Shaja, Ningma and Guolu stayed harmoniously under one roof. We will stay in Shigatse tonight.

Day 5: Shigatse – Lhasa:
Shigatse is the second largest city in Tibet. It is also the home town of Panchen Lama. Today, we will drop a visit of Tashilumpo monastery. Tashilumpo, sprawls on the slops of Mt. Niser, southwest of Shigatse. It covers an area of about 300,000 square meters. There are many valuable and rare historical articles in the monastery. Also we will go around the local free market to see what the local people’s business looks like. After then, we will drive back to Lhasa along the Yurlong Tsangpo River.

Day 6: Leave Lhasa:
Today, we will transfer you to the airport/railway station. Say bye-bye to Tibet.

Acclimatization

Keep in mind that you are traveling overland to highest plateau in the world; the drive goes constantly above 5000m during your journey except Lhasa (3,650m). Driving fast in such an elevation could cause medical conditions (Acute Mountain Sickness) which could be fatal. There is 50% less oxygen compared to sea level in high-altitudes places like in Tibet. The higher the altitude the less is the oxygen in air. Your body needs few days to acclimatize to this less oxygen environment. Although we provide enough information regarding AMS precaution matters, if you get AMS, we do not have other options to treat it other than medication. We advise specially the guest(s) with known heart or lungs or blood diseases to consult their doctor before traveling. Mild headaches, fever, loss of appetite or stomach disorder are symptoms of AMS.

Testimonials

Two weeks holiday in Nepal with Mission Eco-Trek

My wife and I took a 2 week tour in Nepal with Mission Eco-Trek in Feb 2011 and had a fantastic time. Mission Eco-Trek provided the very highest caliber guides and Ram Kumar (the proprietor) personally made sure that everything went smoothly. When storms caused our original flights to be cancelled and then cancelled for a second time, he graciously accommodated our changes at no extra cost. The cost was reasonable and the services provided were exceptional -even beyond what we had expected from the contract....

Namaste!
